Hugh will be giving us a talk and showing us around this ‘wonderful church’ (Pevsner)\, celebrated for its association with George Herbert and his friends the Ferrars of LIttle Gidding\, but having mush else of interest\, including the famous 17C pulp it and readers desk.

\nThis is a massive Norman church with fabulous decoration\, th at the building alone with its unique dedication to a Mercian abbess itsel f beckons the local historian to know better\, but we are privileged to ta ke up an invitation from Dr Stephen Upex\, authority on the Roman Nene Val ley\, to guide us round the nearby Roman site and give us a talk in the ch urch about the palatial Hadrianic building that was excavated by dmund Art is (1789 – 1847) and other archaeological aspects of the site. Stephen is planning to show us some of Artis’s original drawings and will also have a suprise for us connecting Artis with an important contemporary.

\nWe begin at the magnificent late medieval chu rch\, enlarged repeatedly in 14th and 15th centuries\, remarkable for the number of aisles and monuments\, as well as the Victorian stained glass. T he monuments include those to the Johnson family\, prime among them Mauric e\, founder in 1710 of the country’s oldest antiquarian society outside Lo ndon. The vicar or his assistant will show us round. After lunch (own arra ngements) we reconvene at Spalding Gentlemen’s Society in Broad Street\, t en minutes’ walk away\, at 2.00pm for a guided visit to what retains its ‘ Enlightenment’ feel as a cabinet of curiosities. But what a cabinet it is ! (Please note the first floor is difficult to access – please ask if this is a concern).
\nMeet at the church\, 11.30am. There is a p ay and display car park in The Vista (approach road to church). We are not arranging refreshments for this visit\, but early arrivers especially mig ht note that the cafe in Ayscoughfee Gardens near the church\, and there a re many places for lunch in the town centre. The station is also not far a way so train excursion may be an attractive option.
\nDavid Cozens MBE\, President of the Society \, will present the Awards to the successful applicants this year. The Cer emony\, will be held in the prestigious surroundings in the Assembly Rooms of Huntingdon Town Hall. Twelve\, impressive projects about aspects of th e history of Huntingdonshire and local geonology were awarded grants by th e Society.
\nThe Goodliff Award scheme began in 1997 and since the inception the Society has been able to support over 250 worthy projects an d in the last 3 years a further 8 local geonology projects\, supported wit h additional funds donated by the Huntingdonshire Family History Society w hen it amalgamated with Cambridge Family History Society.
\nAfter th e presentation\, David Cozens will give a short talk on earlier King Charl es and Huntingdonshire. Award winnners will both be telling us something a bout their projects and providing display material. Following the talks th ere will be the chance to meet the Goodliff Award winners and discuss thei r projects over a glass of wine.

In 1 703 he bequeathed this great collection\, including also his diaries (not deciphered until 1825) to the Universities of Cambridge or Oxford\, with f irst refusal to his old College of Magdalene.
