Tuesday 31st May evening Ramsey Abbey Walled Kitchen Garden
The Ramsey Abbey Walled
Kitchen Garden Trust is restoring tha garden that serviced the Fellowes
family who became the Lords De Ramsey. Come and see what has been
achieved. Our fellow member Ted Corbett now lives in the former
head-gardener's house and he has invited us to look in on him.
Meet by the Church at 6.30pm.

City is named after the Roman Alban ststed to be the forst Christian
Martyr in Britain. We will be given a guided tour of the
Cathedral. Features include 13th and 14th century wall paintings,
an elaborate 15th century reredos and a painted ceiling over the choir. Following
a break for lunch we will visit the site and museum of the Roman
settlement of Verulamium where there are some fine mosaics and other
Belgic and Roman artifacts.

Grade 1 building developed from the house built for Sir Justinian Isham
during the Commonwealth by John Webb, a pupil of Inigo Jones. the
High Room of 1655 with its magnificant plasterwork ceiling is
particularly notable. The Hall contains fine paintings collected
in the 1670s. The family of the aviator William Rhodes Moorhouse
of Portholme Aircraft Company fame lived at the Hall. there will
be an opportunity to visit the gardens and nearby All Saints Church.
A cream tea is included.Leave

This
museum on the former MoD site records the history of explosives in
armaments productionfrom the seventeenth century to 1991. The
Parliamentary Archives on the Gunpowder Plot are on display.
There is an optional 40 minute land train tour at an extra cost
of £2.00. Light refreshments are available or bring a sandwich
lunch. In the afternoon we will visit the church of Waltham
Abbey. The remaining structure was the non-monastic element and
survived the dissolution. It is an impressive Norman Church with
Victorian restoration that includes a painted ceiling and windows by
Burne-Jones.

September afternoon Rippington Manor, Great Gransden
Now the home of fine art
dealer Peter Johnson and his wife Gay the house was built in 1565 of
lathe and plaster and brick-encased in 1645. The Manor and Lands
ceased to belong to the Priory of Repton in 1538. In the 17th
century the owner was the Master of the Rolls. Visit timed for 2.30pm. Own Transport. Please book by 6th September. Cost: £12.50 {includes afternoon tea} Maximum group size 30. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
