The 1802 house on the site of the Bishop of Ely's Palace was described in 1997 as "being in an extremely dangerous condition, the whole structure could collapse at any time."

Janine Johnson will show us the present house and tell us about the highly successful restoration programme of 2002.

Thursday 9th September Basing House

We aim to arrive around midday at Basingstoke where there are plenty of places to find lunch.  At 2.00 pm we will visit the site of Basing House where Alan Turton, the curator, assures us of a more friendly welcome than that accorded to Huntingdon's Oliver Cromwell 365 years ago.  The House within the earthworks of a Norman castle had been a focus of stubborn royalist resistance until subjugated by Cromwell and his artillery.  The site, including an interpretation centre in the Tudor barn, has just undergone major development.  Afternoon tea is included in the cost.

Leave Huntingdon 09.00 am, return 7.30pm.  Please book by 23th August.
Cost: £29.50 {Coach £19.50. Site and tea £13.50}
