Welcome to the
Huntingdonshire Local History
Society

What
do Oliver Cromwell, the assassin John
Bellingham and the humble sandwich have in
common? Time's up! They all came from the former county of Huntingdonshire,
England. This tiny area - only 365 square miles - has had a tremendous
impact on British and world history. Wherever you travel in the world
today, if you munch happily on a burger or a BLT, you have
Huntingdonshire to thank.

The
Huntingdonshire Local
History Society exists to encourage research into the rich and varied
history of this area. Membership
is open to anyone with an interest in the history of this county, or in
local history generally.From September to April a we hold a
wide-ranging programme of monthly
lectures
on Thursday evenings in Huntingdon. During the summer we organise excursions
to places of historical interest within the county and much further
afield, led by members of the Society or by local experts.The Society
publishes an annual journal, Records
of Huntingdonshire, which contains short and scholarly
articles on Huntingdonshire history.The Society also administers the Goodliff Fund, which gives
financial assistance to individuals and organisations researching
Huntingdonshire's past, or who wish to preserve local historical
records and objects.

Huntingdon Town Hall
is on Market Hill and was built in 1745. The second
floor
contains the Assembly Rooms with an impressive collection of paintings
while the ground floor contains the original Courts of Justice.
Following the transfer of the magistrates court to a new
building
the lease has been assigned to Huntingdon Town Council. |
The
President of the Society is Dr Simon Thurley,
Chief Executive of English Heritage and a former Huntingdonshire
resident.
The Society was founded in
1957 to promote the
study and preservation of Huntingdonshire's past.
Currently
we have a
membership of about 200. The Society is a registered charity, no.
