Society Lecture (Zoom Meeting): Dr Philip Saunders, ‘Maps and Machinery in the History of Fen Drainage’ @ Zoom Meeting
Oct 14 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Philip Saunders, former Principal Archivist, Cambridgeshire Archives & Local Studies:  Maps and Machinery in the History of Fen Drainage

The fens are an area stretching across several counties.  They are unique in England for prompting a genre of cartographic artistry  akin to county maps.  But they also tell the truly heroic story of how technology has been applied to stem the floods and fulfil the agricultural potential of this fertile area.

Autumn Lectures by Zoom

In view of the uncertainty caused by the pandemic and necessity of social distancing, we have decided to cancel normal meetings for the rest of 2020, with the possible exception of the Christmas Social on 4th December, about which a decision will be taken in October.  Ongoing we are also looking at what we do in Spring 2021. We shall however be providing from within our own committee’s members, in September, October and November, talks via Zoom.  If you haven’t experienced this before, it is very easy to sign up to.  You have only to follow the link that we shall send all members a few days before the talk.  You can choose to be visible to others if you have a camera on whatever appliance you are using (laptop/tablet/smartphone).   If you do have an email address but have never told us of it, now’s the time to make amends and do so.

All meetings commence at 7.30 p.m.

As usual these talks are open to non-members, who should email David Smith, requesting the link a few days before.

Society Lecture (Zoom) – Liz Davies, Curator of the St Neots Museum Magic and Folk Medicine in Huntingdonshire @ Zoom Meeting

As usual these talks are open to non-members, who should email David Smith, requesting the link a few days before.

Society Christmas Social – Musical Evening from Edison Bell @ Zoom Meeting Room
Dec 9 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

This year the social restrictions imposed due to Covid19 mean we have to hold a virtual Christmas Social this year. Our Vice Chairman, David Cozens, will talk to us about the Edison Bell Company of Huntingdon and he promises to entertain us with a range of musical entertainment from his wide collection of historical 78rpm records and recordings.

This is going to be an exciting look back at how we used to entertain ourselves with Festive music in the early 20th Century. I remember sitting down with my grandparents in their parlour with the wind up gramophone, listening to their collection of 78rpm records.

The details of how to access the Zoom Meeting will be published to all our members nearer the date.

Look out for other virtual meetings in the New Year.
