Few realise that until 1850’s R amsey Great Whyte had run down the centre of the high street as an open ri ver that served both as a drain and also a navigable waterway. The decisio n was made to conceal the waterway and a series of tunnels were built unde r the High Street that now conceals one of the local Victorian engineering marvels of its age. (Comparable to the covering of the Fleet in London).< /p>\n
Clive’s talk will take us through the history of the ‘lodes’ that flow into these tunnels from the Middle Ages onward\, their construction a nd subsequent history to the present day.

Do come along\, h ear about these projects and congratulate the successful applicants for th eir prestigious awards.
\nOur new President\, Julie Mont agu\, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke\, will present the awards and afterwards give a talk of an earlier American member of the family\, Alberta Countess of Sandwich.
\nOn 25th July 1905 Alberta Sturges\, born 1877 in Chi cago\, made a truely life-altering marriage to George Montagu. Eleven year s later\, on the death of his father\, George became the 9th Earl of Sandw ich and she the Countess. The couple moved into HInchingbrooke House\, the family’s ancestral seat since 1627. Their marriage would last an impressi ve 46 years till Alberta’s death in 1951. Yet\, beneath the surface intrig uing questions remain. Did Alberta’s heart belong in this marriage\, or di d she yearn for a life of contemplation as a nun? Did she compromise her o wn aspirations to fulfil those of her socially ambitious mother?
\nA lberta’s story reveals a tapestry woven with threads of love\, duty\, and personal fulfilment\, set against the rich backdrop of a storied family le gacy in a period of profound societal change.

Sadly we have no musical entertainment planned this year (th ough we are still open to offers). But\, Liz\, now retired from the St Neo ts Museum has kindly offered to give us an insight\, drawn from her long e xperience as a curator there and previously in Peterborough\, into how our predecessors coped with Christmas before there was any Royal Broadcast or repeats of Doctor Who to watch. Did they eat turkey\, goose or was it jus t bread and dripping? Did the devout or not so devout Anglicans stagger ou t of the pub to the midnight mass? Did the temperate noncoms look up from reading their bibles?
\nWe want to make this event somewhat interact ive. Come readt to share some family tales and recollections of your own o r your relatives Christmas celebrations. (No tales of Oliver Cromwell’s Ch ristmas humbug allowed!!)

Previous me tal detecting surveys between 2012 and 2016 had collected some 350 objects including Anglo-Saxon coins and metalwork which anticipated the finding o f significant Early to Middle Anglo-Saxon settlement remains. The earlier phase of occupation lay between the late 6th and early 8th century and was characterised by its sunken-featured buildings\, including a rarely found ‘giant’ example. The finds suggest and emphasis on cloth-making by the inhabitants which – consideri ng the presence of coins and pottery from the near continent – was perhaps intended for cross-channel trade. The early settlement was supplanted by an impressive hall complex which sheds much needed light on estate centres in Huntingdonshire during the poorly understood late 8th and early 9th ce nturies before the arrival of the Danes.
