Thurs. 21 May, 2.00 p.m. An afternoon stroll around Brampton

Our tour will be led by local long-term resident Michael Measures, meeting on the Green. He will talk to us about Brampton and point out locations of interest in the High St before taking us to the Parish Church at approx. 3.30 where Julie Barker will tell us about its points of interest and possibly about Olivia Bernard Sparrow (b1775), on whom she is an expert. The Church has much to surprise and admire: the ‘best misericords in the county’ (Pevsner); also monuments to Pepys sister Paulina erected by the diarist, a fabulous one to Sir Robert Bernard (1679), to Olivia Bernard Sparrow and children, extraordinary glass memorialising the Great War, and outside, the memorials to James Alexander, the 5th Earl of Sandwich’s servant, a ‘native of Africa’ nand his son who fought at Trafalgar.

Tea and coffee (and toilets) will be available at the Black Bull pub (nextdoor) afterwards.

Cost : No charge, but donations to the church very welcome.   

Meet at 2:00pm at Brampton Green (Some parkinmg there but much more at memorial Centre, Thrapston Road, 10 minutes walk away and closer to the Church
